Transgender Day of Visibility What is this day commemorating?

30 March 2022 By Blue Chairs Resort By The Sea

Transgender people are an essential part of our communities and culture. However, this community faces constant discrimination and a series of human rights violations, which is why as every March 31, since 2009, the International Transgender Day of Visibility is commemorated. This is a date that was originally promoted by the American activist Rachel Crandall, in order to raise awareness about the existing discrimination against trans people.

Visibility is very important for the trans community, because it contributes to overcome prejudices strongly rooted by some members of society.

Before commemorating trans visibility, and making this date a day of awareness; there was only the International Transgender Day of Remembrance, this day is dedicated to remembering trans people who have been subjected to hate crimes due to transphobia.

In order to raise awareness and make a real change, we must remember the people who were victims of discrimination due to ignorance. However, it is just as fundamental to make visible the transsexual, transgender, transvestite and drag people who are part of this society. Regardless of your gender identity or sexual orientation, let us always remember to fight for a world in which we are all included, have security and the same rights as cisgender people, and not exclusively on this day, but every one of the 365 days of the year.
