Do you know how Gay Pride Day started to be celebrated?

17 May 2021 By Blue Chairs Resort by the Sea
As you well know, every year in June, the world dresses up in rainbows to celebrate Gay Pride Day.

But what exactly should we be proud of? First, you should know that this celebration was extended to the entire LGBT+ community to include all sexual orientations outside of heterosexuality. And while many go to the LGBT+ march every year, few actually know the origin of this celebration.

History and origin of gay pride

To understand the origin of this celebration, we must go back to 1969 when a group of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people rebelled against the police who came to attack the gay bar “Stonewall Inn” in New York.

Not many people know this, but the gay pride movement was started by three black women (two of them transgender): Marsha P. Johnson, Stormé DeLarverie and Sylvia Rivera. In the environment that has been experienced with the #BlackLivesMatter movement, many members of the community have been keen to remember that LGBT+ rights are due in part to the fierce battle of African American women.

On June 28, 1970, a year after the riots in New York, Brenda Howard organized the first gay pride march in that city. In Europe, the first gay march was held on April 29, 1972, in Münster, Germany.

In Mexico, the first gay pride march took place in June 1978, eight years after the first in the United States.

Why is it still important to celebrate Gay Pride Day?

The world has been celebrating Gay Pride Day for over 50 years. Although in many countries a lot has been gained in the field of LGBT+ rights, this celebration is super important to remember all the people discriminated in the past and to fight for those who are still denied rights, equality and good treatment.

The fight is not over, it continues. Every day we fight for it, but on Gay Pride Day we go crazy to make our voices heard and celebrate being part of this energetic community full of love and respect.

This year 2021 Vallarta Pride is back with a full week to celebrate sexual diversity with parties, artistic events, music and, of course, with our incredible parade that goes through the malecon and that every year is more spectacular. Learn more about this great LGBT+ celebration that will bring together people and artists from all over the world.
